A Cumberland County grand jury indicted 61-year-old Michael Steve Cardin of Crossville yesterday for aggravated assault and leaving the scene of an accident. The charges stem from an incident in June 2020 where Cardin reportedly operated a golf cart and intentionally rammed another occupied by a male and female on Cline Road. The woman was injured and taken to the hospital.
Joshua Lennon Simmons, age 24, of Crossville, faces aggravated assault and child abuse. The indictments indicate Simmons caused bodily injury to an adult female by strangulation last December and treated a 5-year-old in such a manner as to inflict injury.
A woman familiar to law enforcement was also indicted by the grand jury for aggravated assault, resisting arrest and evading arrest. The incident with 55-year-old Susan Denise Stokes of Crossville took place in August 2020 when she allegedly hit a man with a vehicle in Lake Tansi. Officers stopped Stokes several minutes later at the corner of Highway 70 East and Peavine Road. It was not her first encounter with law enforcement. In November 2019, Stokes was arrested after reportedly stabbing a male with a steak knife at a home on Apache Trail in Lake Tansi. In June 2019, Stokes was involved in a standoff with law enforcement in Cumberland County reportedly armed with a knife.
All three will be arraigned in Cumberland County Criminal Court March 15, 2021.
