The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has fined the TVA more than $600,000 and banned one TVA executive from nuclear activities for five years. A recent investigation revealed TVA violated whistleblower protection regulations by firing some nuclear engineers who raised safety concerns about the Watts Bar nuclear plant in Rhea County.
The NRC found that TVA’s former vice president of regulatory affairs and former director of corporate nuclear licensing, Joe Shea, violated the NRC’s employee protection rule and engaged in deliberate misconduct. Shea will be prohibited with any involvement in nuclear activities overseen by the NRC for five years.
inspections at the Watts Bar nuclear plant continue to review and assess work environment issues. The latest one reveals TVA has made progress in addressing these issues.
