Tennessee Governor Bill Lee is reportedly expected to declare Tennessee teachers as essential workers, meaning they will be required to report to school even if they’ve been exposed to the coronavirus.
As long as they don’t show symptoms, teachers must still work with children, even though they don’t have their test results back. They’ll be required to wear masks, socially distance and perform extra cleaning.
This proposed policy by Governor Lee comes in the face of warnings from school district representatives and teacher advocates. Lewis Thomason, representing East Tennessee districts, sent a letter urging Governor Lee to follow the Centers for Disease Control’s guidance for reopening schools, which recommends teachers quarantine at home for 14 days after being exposed to the coronavirus.
