A helicopter crash in the Tennessee River Monday claimed the life of Joe Clayton, the co-founder of Clayton Automobiles and Clayton Homes. Officers say Joe and Jim Clayton, along with John McBride and Flynt Griffin, were aboard when it crashed. Jim Clayton, McBride and Flynt were not injured and were picked up by a boat.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the accident.
Jim and Joe Clayton started Clayton Homes in 1966. The company grew into the largest producer and seller of manufactured housing in America before it was sold to Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway in 2003.
