A Cumberland County deputy called for help last night after a shot from what sounded like a high powered rifle came very close to striking him. The report states Deputy Elijah Tollett was in his cruiser in the parking lot of Smith’s Chapel Church on the 13,000 block of Highway 70 West. The shot, that came within 10 to 20 feet of Tollett, originated from across the road. Deputy Tollett took cover behind his cruiser, drew his firearm and called for backup. A check of the area revealed subjects on Page Road who heard the same shot fired. No officers were injured and a search did not reveal the shooter.
