ROANE COUNTY COMMISSION MOVES FORWARD IN JAIL EXPANSION PLAN

///

The Roane County Commission met last night in a special called session to vote on borrowing money to begin the expansion of the jail. The commission heard from an official with the Tennessee Correction Institute that said the jail expansion must be done or the county would face moving at least half of the jail population to nearby county jails to stay certified. After hearing from the TCI official, the commission passed the resolution authorizing the issuance, sale, and payment of capital outlay notes of an amount of not to exceed one million dollars for the first step in expanding the jail. The current jail was built around 10 years ago to hold 175 inmates. As of this afternoon, the jail has a total of 343 inmates.
