CORN AND TOBACCO HARVEST BEGINS

Producers who have dryer capabilities started harvesting corn last week, with good yields reported. Additionally, tobacco harvest is underway. Hay baling was the predominant activity last week. Other field activities included spraying for insects. Hard rains hit some areas of the state but only halted field activities temporarily. There were 6.0 days suitable for field work. Topsoil moisture was rated 2 percent very short, 18 percent short, 75 percent adequate, and 5 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture was rated 2 percent very short, 20 percent short, 75 percent adequate, and 3 percent surplus.

Corn – Dented – 87 percent this week, 79 percent last week

Corn – Mature – 42 percent this week, 21 percent last week

Corn – Harvested – 5 percent this week, 1 percent last week

Cotton – Setting Bolls – 100 percent this week, 97 percent last week

Cotton – Bolls Opening – 13 percent this week, 8 percent last week

Soybeans – Blooming – 95 percent this week, 93 percent last week

Soybeans – Setting Pods – 89 percent this week, 83 percent last week

Soybeans – Dropping Leaves – 17 percent this week, 4 percent last week

Tobacco – Topped – 91 percent this week, 88 percent last week

Tobacco – Cut – 47 percent this week, 20 percent last week

Corn – 1 percent poor, 13 percent fair, 60 percent good and 26 percent excellent

Cotton – 2 percent poor, 15 percent fair, 64 percent good and 19 percent excellent

Soybeans – 3 percent poor, 22 percent fair, 61 percent good and 14 percent excellent

Tobacco – 4 percent very poor, 16 percent poor, 41 percent fair, 29 percent good and 10 percent excellent

Pasture – 1 percent very poor, 8 percent poor, 32 percent fair, 51 percent good and 8 percent excellent
