A false call of shots fired at a residence on Woods Chapel Road north of Harriman yesterday afternoon sent law enforcement rushing to the area. The Roane County SWAT team rushed to the location only to see the residents very surprised their house was surrounded by law enforcement. Sheriff Jack Stockton said it was a prank call known as swatting which is very dangerous to the residents.
Swatting is a criminal harassment tactic of deceiving an emergency service (via such means as hoaxing an emergency services dispatcher) into sending a police and emergency service response team to another person’s address.
No one was injured. Sheriff Stockton said these types of incidents need to stop before someone does get hurt. The incident is under investigation.
