Monday morning, a Cumberland County deputy accompanied a nurse into a cell in the Cumberland County jail to check on 23-year-old inmate Casey Blake Hamby.
When the nurse asked if he could check his pulse, Hamby gave an expletive-studded response, then charged at the nurse.
The deputy intervened, and Hamby swung at him, striking him in the head and arms. When the deputy reached for his Taser, Hamby surrendered.
The deputy was sent to the emergency room at Cumberland Medical Center for evaluation, then returned to duty.
Hamby, who was charged with assault, was due to appear in court this morning.
