The Bledsoe County man who is charged in the shooting deaths of two people in Cumberland County on Tuesday was convicted of voluntary manslaughter in a separate fatal shooting in 1998.

A jury found 47-year-old John Patrick Fields guilty of voluntary manslaughter and aggravated assault in March 1998 for the fatal shooting of Ricky Lloyd.

That shooting happened in the spring of 1997 on East Valley Road in Pikeville.

Fields was sentenced to six years in prison for the manslaughter charge and four years for the aggravated-assault charge.

Fields served six years before his release.

Investigators in Cumberland County arrested Fields on Tuesday for the shooting that killed two people and injured and two others in the Vandever Community. He’s charged with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted first-degree murder.

One of the deceased victims was 23 year old Makayla Manning, shot at a residence on Vandever road. Her husband, Joe Manning, was also shot and is at U.T. Medical Center. Another woman, Eleashea Curry, was shot at the same residence and is also at the Knoxville hospital, recovering. The other murder victim, Lowell “Chip” Simmons II, was found dead about four miles from the Manning residence, beaten beyond recognition and possibly shot as well. An autopsy will determine his cause of death.

Fields is being held in the Cumberland County jail on $5 million bond and was scheduled to appear in court March 18.
