The State of Tennessee plans to invest $1 million in an upcoming Ken Burns documentary on country music.
Calling it an “excellent deal” for the state, Tourist Development Commissioner Mark Ezell said the second installment of the total $1 million commitment is included in the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development’s forthcoming budget proposal.
Ezell announced at a budget hearing Monday the project includes eight two-hour sessions due to air this fall on PBS. The documentary will also be made available in other formats.
As part of his research for the documentary, Burns reportedly plans to travel with state officials for a promotional tour with musical artists in March.
Ezell said some 40 million viewers are expected to watch the series’ first showing, which will be filmed in Bristol, Knoxville, Nashville and Memphis.
