It took 30 minutes for the Roane County Commission to decide to wave the vehicle license tag fee for volunteer fire dept. officials and rescue squad members. The discussion came about in order to differentiate between active personnel, who would receive the break, and those who are no longer active, who would not receive the break. Commissioners expressed their feelings and thanks to the men and women who have served the community. They also said that many more such people are needed to replace the aging group of volunteers. The Tennessee Dept. of Safety allows such designated personnel to have the $29 tag registration fee waived. However, $2.50 of that fee would still be paid as it is an added local tax. County Clerk Beth Johnson told the commission that about 100 would have the tax waived as well with the office still being able to run in the black. She said that if that was not thecase, the office would ask for a budget adjustment toward the end ofthe year. The commission voted unanimously to waive the tax fee.
