A Roane County woman pleaded guilty Tuesday to charges of solicitation to commit first-degree murder. Laura Anne Buckingham entered the plea after the hit man she attempted to hire to kill her ex-boyfriend in 2016 turned out to be a Tennessee Bureau of Investigation agent.

Buckingham admitted having spoken with the undercover TBI agent in February 2016 about killing the father of her child. Two separate audio recordings of their conversations support this.

Buckingham’s then-boyfriend alerted Roane County authorities that Buckingham, a former Marine and onetime bakery owner, was plotting to kill her ex. The Roane County District Attorney General enlisted the TBI’s assistance. Buckingham, who was pregnant at the time, was arrested in March 2016.

Because Buckingham has no criminal history, she could have been sentenced to eight to 12 years. In return for her guilty plea, the State agreed to a 10-year sentence. A sentencing hearing is set for March 18, to determine where she will serve out her time.
