State Representative Rick Staples has proposed to legalize sports betting in Tennessee. Staples is a Democrat from Knoxville. If approved by the state, the Tennessee Sports Gaming Act would allow local jurisdictions to approve the gambling by local election. The bill would impose a 10 percent tax on revenue from betting on sports events with the betting books set up in any bar or restaurant choosing to do so and paying the tax. 40 percent of the tax would go to the state’s general fund, 30 percent would go to fund Tennessee community colleges and applied technology schools, with the remaining 30 percent going to local governments for education and infrastructure.
