BREAKING NEWS – The City of Crossville has new permanent chief of police, pending his acceptance of the job

City Manager Greg Wood told 105.7 News this afternoon that he has made a job offer to Jesse Brooks of Kingston, who has over 40 years experience in law enforcement and holds a masters degree in criminal justice.

Wood said Brooks should be on the job by the end of this month.

Brooks was selected from eight finalist that were interviewed for the position. Chris Kendrick has been serving as interim chief while the search was conducted. Kendrick was appointed to that temporary position after David Beaty was dismissed as chief.

The eight finalist included:

JESSIE BROOKS of Kingston – Tennessee Highway Patrol Captain, served with the THP from 1981 to present day.

TONY DAVIS, JR. of Crossville – Lieutenant with the Crossville Police Department. A total of 27 years in law enforcement.

JON MARK FEHLMAN of Murfreesboro – served with the Santa Rosa, California Police Department from 1996 to 2008, Bainbridge Island Police Chief from 2008 to 2012.

RICHARD HOLT of Crossville – formerly of the Cookeville Police Department.

CHRIS KENDRICK of Crossville – Current Interim Police Chief for the Crossville Police Department.

CRAIG MOATES of McKenzie, Tennessee – Current Chief of Police of the McKenzie Police Department.

BRIAN TILLEY of Crossville – Currently a lieutenant with the Crossville Police Department with 22 years experience.

JONATHAN WILLIS of Riceville – Former Athens, Tennessee Police Department chief detective and former special agent with the bomb and arson squad.

Wood had 17 applicants initially to choose from when the position of police chief was advertised. The other 9 applicants who did not make the final round included:

ROBERT EDWARDS of Humphreys County – Chief deputy with the Humphreys County Sheriff’s Department. Began his career in law enforcement in 1997.

WILLIAM KAIN of Norris, Tennessee – Current Chief of Police for the Norris Police Department in Anderson County. A total of 18 years in law enforcement.

THOMAS LAY of Rocky Top, Tennessee – Formerly with the Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper, former deputy United States Marshal and former sheriff of Scott County.

JAMES PHELPS of Illinois – Current Chief of Police for the Bourbonnias, Illinois Police Department with 29 years experience in law enforcement.

GREGORY PURDEN of Brevard County – current commander of operational services with the Brevard County Sheriff’s Department.

MARK ROSSER of Crossville – Current Captain in the Fairfield Glade Police Department. Former Interim Police Chief for the Crossville Police Department. Served with the Crossville Police Department for 29 years.

RODNEY SHOAP of Crossville – former Crossville police chief and current Director for the Cumberland County E-911 Communications Center. A total of 26 years in law enforcement.

MARK STEINMAN – served with the Harriman and Crossville Police Departments as well as the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department. Total of 24 years law enforcement and 28 years fire department experience.

DANIEL R. WRIGHT of Harriman – former TBI agent and Rockwood police chief from 2013 to 2017.
