RAINS BRING FIELD ACTIVITIES TO NEAR HALT

Lots of ill-timed rainfall this last week of September has delayed crop harvest and even drowned a few soybean fields. Before the rainfall, yields were expected to be above average.

There were 1.3 days suitable for field work, compared to 5.4 last week. Topsoil moisture rated 1 percent short, 46 percent adequate, and 53 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture rated 2 percent short, 59 percent adequate, and 39 percent surplus.

CROP PROGRESS

Corn – Dented – 100 percent this week, 100 percent last week

Corn – Mature – 97 percent this week, 93 percent last week

Corn – Harvested – 64 percent this week, 60 percent last week

Cotton – Bolls Opening – 95 percent this week, 93 percent last week

Cotton – Harvested – 14 percent this week, 10 percent last week

Soybeans – Dropping Leaves – 67 percent this week, 60 percent last week

Soybeans – Harvested – 18 percent this week, 16 percent last week

Tobacco – Cut – 90 percent this week, 86 percent last week

Winter Wheat – Planted – 11 percent this week, 9 percent last week

Winter Wheat – Emerged – 6 percent this week

CROP CONDITIONS

Corn – 2 percent poor, 16 percent fair, 58 percent good and 24 percent excellent

Cotton – 4 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 19 percent fair, 52 percent good and 21 percent excellent

Pasture – 1 percent very poor, 12 percent poor, 31 percent fair, 45 percent good and 11 percent excellent

Soybeans – 1 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 21 percent fair, 56 percent good and 18 percent excellent

Compared to last week, Feeder Steers/Bulls 3.00-6.00 lower with instances 

Of 10.00 lower; Feeder Heifers under 550 lbs. 3.00-5.00 lower, over 550 lbs. 

5.00 higher; Slaughter Cows 3.00 lower; Slaughter Bulls 3.00 lower.

Feeder: 437       Slaughter: 38       Replacement: 69

 

Slaughter cows made up 8 percent of the offering, slaughter bulls 1 percent, 

and feeders 91 percent.  The feeder supply included 33 percent steers, 36 

percent heifers, and 31 percent bulls. Near 22 percent of the run weighed 

over 600 lbs.
