A former head football coach for Cumberland County High School is set to be inducted into the Tennessee School for the Deaf (TSD) Hall of Fame.

Dan Schlafer started his coaching career in 1974 at West Greene High School. In 1976, he went to Harrison Chilhowee Baptist Academy to coach and teach.

Schlafer then served as assistant coach at TSD in 1978 when the team went without a win. He was named head coach the following year and led TSD to winning seasons. He was named the National Deaf Prep Football Coach of the Year in 1980.

Schlafer would then accept an athletic director and coaching position with Knox Catholic in 1984 and remained there until 1992.

Schlafer was then hired as the head football coach for the Cumberland County Jets in Crossville and remained at the helm until 1995.

In 1996, Schlafer would accept a principal position at Tellico Plains High School and remain there until 2006 when he became Federal Programs Director for the Monroe County School System. Schlafer would maintain that until 2015 when he returned to Cumberland County. He currently is the Federal Programs Director for the Cumberland County School System.

Over his career as a coach, Schlafer was named East Tennessee Independent Conference Football Coach of the Year in 1979, 1980 and in 1982. He also was named District Football Coach of the Year in 1985, 1987, 1988 and in 1989.

The hall of fame induction ceremony for Schlafer will be held October 6 at Tennessee School for the Deaf in Knoxville.
