A multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 40 in Roane County yesterday resulted in injuries and closure of the westbound lanes for hours. According to the report released this morning by troopers, officers say a tractor-trailer hauling crushed cars driven by Melvin Dean Branson of Rockwood was negotiating a curve on the on ramp for the interstate when the crushed vehicles spilled into both westbound lanes of the interstate. A Dodge Sprinter van with a trailer and boat driven by 53-year-old Donald David Burnett of Holly Springs, Mississippi, struck the crushed cars. Troopers say Branson, Burnett and a passenger in Burnett’s van, 42-year-old Stephen Lee Ingle of Helenwood, were injured. The accident remains under investigation. Westbound traffic was closed for hours as the accident was cleaned up, resulting in a traffic backup of seven miles at one point on I-40.
