A Tennessee National Guard soldier assigned to the Forward Support Company, Support Squadron and attached to the 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment has died at a California training center.

The Tennessee National Guard revealed in a news release PFC Tara Turnage was killed Monday morning in a vehicle accident at the National Training Center in Fort Irwin, California. Turnage, who trained in Humboldt, lived in Memphis.

Tennessee’s Adjutant General Maj. Gen. Max Haston, who was nearby when the accident occurred, said in a statement the training center has an “unforgiving desert environment.” He added Turnage was “doing her job in this harsh environment and had an accident.”

An investigation is underway.
