Some Cumberland County residents are being contacted once again telling them they have won the lottery in a scam. This time it is a letter from Heartland Lottery, Inc. with an enclosed check saying a person has won a large sum money and it will be delivered to them by a special courier once they contact the representative to tell them what to do with the check that is enclosed. The scammers will instruct the person to deposit the check and send them a lesser sum of money through a wire service or valid cashier’s check. Once the person have deducted the money from their account their check will not be valid and the victim of the scam will be out the money which will not be recoverable. Officers say when you receive these types of notices you should immediately beware and always remember:
* You never need to pay money to claim a prize from a legitimate lottery.
* Legitimate lotteries never contacts winners by Facebook, email or phone.
* The only way you will know you have won is when checks are delivered to you.
Stay safe and refuse to be a victim. If you aren’t sure if it is true or not check it out before sending money or giving personal information.
