Parts of McMinn and Monroe County near Madisonville this morning just after sunrise experienced a small earthquake. The U.S. Geological Survey registered the 1.7 magnitude quake about 3 miles west of Madisonville. Officials say an earthquake that small is typically not felt by many. Weak tremors and earthquakes like these aren’t uncommon to this part of East Tennessee. Officials say Roane and Loudon counties have seen a fair amount of similar seismic activity in the past few months, posting small quakes that typically reach magnitudes between 1.0 and 3.0.
