Two individuals from Morgan County and one from Roane County are facing charges following a traffic stop. A Roane County deputy was turning into Roane Street from North Kentucky at 11 p.m. last night when he observed a silver Chevrolet Cavalier with no headlights on at the stop sign that pulled out nearly striking the sheriff’s department cruiser. Officers stopped the driver, 20-year-old Zachary Smith of Wartburg at the Interstate 40 352 east bound on ramp. The deputy reportedly asked Smith for his driver’s license and insurance and Smith handed him a debit card and a warning citation from Oak Ridge. Upon asking all three occupants of the vehicle if there was anything illegal or any weapons in the vehicle, 24-year-old Elijah Mitchell of Wartburg reportedly stated he had a firearm underneath the driver seat. A consent search of the vehicle revealed several bottles of alcohol. Mitchell was charged with possession of a handgun while under the Influence. Officers also arrested 19-year-old Cameron Drake Pennington of Harriman for underage consumption.
