Early yesterday morning (Saturday, December 16, 2017), Cookeville, Tennessee police responded to the 300th block of West 5th Street to investigate a complaint of gunshots being fired from a vehicle into a residence. When officers arrived they learned that two men inside a residence exchanged gunshots with 19-year-old Jonathan R. Dees after Dees reportedly began firing gunshots toward them. Officers found several spent casings located outside of a residence and evidence the residence had been struck by at least one bullet. Dees left the scene prior to police arrival. Shortly after, police arrived the Sparta Police Department and White County Sheriff’s Department conducted a traffic stop on Dees’ vehicle. He was arrested and charged with attempted criminal homicide, 4 counts of reckless endangerment, and violation of bond conditions. He was transported to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department and placed under a $278,000 bond. As officers were investigating the scene a natural gas meter was discovered to be damaged by gunfire and leaking. As a precaution, the Cookeville Fire Department responded and the immediate area was evacuated until the leaked could be contained. No one was injured as a result of this incident. This incident is believed to be related to domestic violence and the investigation is ongoing.
