Good news and bad news for residents in the future who use Bowman Bend and Caney Creek Road in Roane County. County Executive Ron Woody said The Tennessee Improve Act calls for the replacement the Caney Creek Bridge on Caney Creek Road. Woody says his staff will start working with the State Department of Transportation next month on the project design. Both Bowman Bend and Caney Creek Road and the intersection of these roads will be impacted. The alignment of the bridge could impact the Caney Creek boat ramp launching area, which in turn could both temporarily or even permanently close down the parking and ramp access. The county then may have an opportunity to move the ramp area to the Tennessee River side of the road. Once completed, county residents and visitors will receive the benefit of a wider bridge, boaters will benefit from a higher bridge and county taxpayers will benefit of not having to pay for the entire project. The county will not have to pay for the entire project. Part of the success in Improve Act funding goes to state legislators and the governor who supported the act. Officials say the Caney Creek Bridge is 72 years old and is need of replacement. A construction start date and estimated completion date will be announced soon.
