Roane County has already surpassed the number of drug overdose deaths from last year. Officials say 14 people died in 2016 and so far this year, 19 have passed away. The county medical examiner says seven deaths are pending but 19 are confirmed drug overdoses. Officials say the deaths in Roane County are just not overdosing from prescription drugs but other illegal drug use. The problem is not only in the region but statewide and national. In Knox County, 211 have died from overdoses this year alone. During a press conference last week, Secretary of Health and Human Services Tom Price said there were 52,000 overdose deaths in the United States. The majority of those, approximately 33,000, were opioid related.
