WHITE COUNTY INMATES OFFERED SHORTER SENTENCE IN EXCHANGE FOR BIRTH-CONTROL PROGRAM

Several inmates in the White County Jail are taking advantage of an opportunity to cut down on their sentences by undergoing voluntary vasectomies. But many, including District Attorney Bryant Dunaway, say it’s not ethical and could be illegal. Newschannel 5 is reporting that in May, General Sessions Judge Sam Benningfield signed a standing order that says inmates would receive 30 days toward the end of their sentences if they undergo a voluntary birth control procedure. Women receive a Nexplanon implant while men would receive a vasectomy, free of charges. So far 32 women have received the implants while 38 men are awaiting vasectomies. Judge Benningfield says he signed the order to “encourage inmates to take personal responsibility.” He also hopes to break the cycle of repeat offenders that come before him. DA Dunaway says that his office cannot support the matter. The ACLU has also chimed in on the issue calling it “unconstitutional.”
