Citizens in Rockwood are coming together to help a Vietnam veteran in need. John Geary’s home was recently condemned leaving Geary with nowhere to live. Many in Rockwood say John is a familiar sight as he walks with his dog in several places. A temporary place to stay and medical assistance for Geary has been provided by way of help from the Roane County Veterans Service office in Roane County. According to the veterans service office, they assist nearly 700 veterans with a variety of services out of 5,400 veterans currently living in Roane County. In the meantime, a group called “A Home 4 Hero’s” has come forward in building a small home for Geary to live in. The home will be constructed on Geary’s property once the condemned home is demolished and land cleared. Officials with the group says the 12 foot by 24 foot small home will include a bedroom, bathroom and kitchen. Once the home is completed, the group tries to get the veteran a new American flag for the home. Group officials say money is needed to finish the project, including paying taxes that are past due owed by Geary as well as tearing down the old home and clearing the property.
