A Rhea County couple had to be extricated from wreckage after a single-vehicle crash Thursday night in Rockwood. Police say Stewart and Cora Fugate of Spring City, were traveling south on Highway 27 when the vehicle went off the roadway near Barrington Place. Rockwood Fire and Police were quickly on the scene and signaled for Rescue Squad personnel after evaluating the scene. The rescue had to be plotted very carefully as the vehicle was leaning. A high-angle rescue was achieved by placing the victims on a backboard and hauling them up to the awaiting ambulance which transported them to UT Medical Center for unknown injuries. The highway was closed to one lane for nearly two hours during the incident. Heavy rain is being determined as the cause of the accident.
