The Federal Programs Director of Cumberland County Schools had a disconcerting announcement for the school board Thursday. The county has been earmarked to lose $400,000 in formula grant money due to federal budget cuts. FPD Dan Schlafer reported that the county will feel the impact because the county’s poverty level rate has improved. Preliminary estimates show that the funding cuts will go from providing $514 per student to $407 per student. The most distressful image that Schlafer painted was using the school system’s instructional supplies and equipment fund which, after the cuts, will be $10,000…for the entire county. He said it was the deepest cut he has ever seen while in his position. Schlafer said that most of the money will be channeled back into the country’s defense fund. He did say that all school board members should email state officials to lodge protests.
