A state inmate that has been on Death Row since 1983, has died of natural causes. Walter L. Caruthers was serving his sentence at Riverbend Maximum Security Prison in Nashville on a charge of murder, robbery with a deadly weapon and aggravated kidnapping. Caruthers and an accomplice picked up the victims, Wilhemina Stahl, and her brother George, in Ohio while they were hitchhiking to Georgia. Both were later attacked in a remote area of Knoxville where the woman was killed. Her brother was left for dead but survived. Caruthers was sentenced to death in Feb. 1983.
