RHEA COUNTY MAN CHARGED WITH RAPE OF A CHILD

A north Rhea County man is facing a charge of rape of child after the Rhea County Grand Jury handed down the indictment earlier this month, according to county law enforcement officials.  48-year-old Richard D. Jordan is facing the charge after investigators claim he raped a girl under the age of 5-years-old.  Jordan was indicted by the grand jury on Monday, December 5th, and he was arrested the next day, according to jail records.
Rhea County Sheriff’s Department Investigator Rocky Potter said his department’s investigation into the alleged rape began in September.  “We had received a referral from [the victim’s] family member that had called the state’s child abuse hotline,” Potter said.  Investigators said the girl was interviewed at the Child Advocacy Center in Chattanooga, and a medical exam was performed.
“She gave clear details about being touched inappropriately by Mr. Jordan,” Potter said.  While Jordan refused to talk to investigators while the case was under review, Potter said law enforcement officials were able to gather enough evidence by talking to other witnesses and the victim’s family members to take before a grand jury.
“This all led us to believe that there was no doubt that the assault occurred,” Potter said.
Jordan was arrested and charged with one count of rape of child, a felony, and according to jail records his bond was set at $100,000. He was still incarcerated as of press time Tuesday and a court appearance is set for Thursday, Dec. 22.  Potter said that Jordan was already on the state’s sex offender registry after having served time in prison on a similar charge nearly 10 years ago.
