Police in Hendersonville say that the husband of late Grand Ole Opry star Jean Shepard will not face charges after he shot and killed a man who stabbed and killed his granddaughter. 79-year-old Benny Birchfield was also stabbed in the fracas. Birchfield told investigators that he returned home around 3 AM Saturday and heard a disturbance in the basement between 18-year-old Icie Hawkins and her boyfriend, 21-year-old Travis Sanders. Birchfield said that Sanders came at him with a large knife, stabbing him in the head, neck and arm. In self- defense the older man was able to shoot Sanders in a hail of bullets. He died at the scene. Hawkins later died on the way to the hospital from several stab wounds. Birchfield underwent surgery for his wounds and has since been released. It’s being said that Hawkins may have tried to break off the relationship she was having with Sanders. The investigation is continuing.
