TULLAHOMA, TN (WSMV) – Severe storms tore through the Mid-South on Tuesday night, killing three in Alabama and a husband and wife in Polk County, TN. The National Weather Service said its newest findings show an EF2 tornado struck Tullahoma on Tuesday night. Preliminary damage survey results showed the tornado was an EF1, but it was later upgraded.
Meteorologists conducted a site survey in Coffee County on Wednesday morning. They estimated wind speeds to be around 105 mph.Many trees were knocked down there and a few dozen homes were damaged by fallen trees, the roof of a McDonalds Restaurant was blown awaqy according to preliminary reports.The Associated Press is reporting that a husband and wife were killed in Polk County. At least two others were injured in Polk County and seven people were injured in McMinn County, according to the AP.
The National Weather Service says numerous tornadoes also hit Mississippi and Alabama. Three people were killed in northeastern Alabama as the storms rolled through. Schools in Tullahoma are closed on Wednesday because of the damage the storms left behind. Strong winds toppled trees and power lines along Lakewood Drive. On Jackson Street, the roof of a McDonald’s was partially blown off.
The National Weather Service will be investigating a possible second tornado that may have touched down near Manchester. They say only one person has been reported injured from the storms when a tree landed on his car. He is expected to be OK.
